On 10–12 December, the first meeting of the partners of the Erasmus strategic partnership project “Inclusion of content on effective-sexual and gender diversity in health sciences university environments” was held in Malaga, which was attended by students and lecturers in the field of healthcare from the Department of Rehabilitation of the Faculty of Medicine of Kauno kolegija Higher Education Institution (HEI) (Kauno kolegija HEI is a member of the UNINOVIS Alliance), Sapienza University of Rome (Italy), Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon (Portugal), University of Malta (Malta), Charles University (Czech Republic) and University of Malaga (Spain).
On the morning of the first day of the project, the project participants discussed the project goals and activities and later participated in sessions in separate groups. The lecturers delved into integrated communication methods, and the students analysed how to make universities safer spaces. In the afternoon, all participants participated in an educational excursion to the centre of Malaga, where practical activities were held – they searched for signs of tolerance in local culture and spaces.
On the morning of the second day, the participants visited Torremolinos, famous for its LGBTQ+ community history. During the tour, they visited Pasaje Begoña, a symbolic place that marks the beginning of the history of LGBTQ+ rights in Spain. Educational activities were held about the events that took place here, which were significant for the fight for equality and human rights. Historical challenges and current achievements were discussed, inspiring further activities.
After the tour, everyone gathered for lunch, during which they tasted traditional Spanish paella, which allowed them to even more feel the spirit of the local culture. In the afternoon, the participants returned to the University of Malaga, where a discussion took place on what signs of tolerance are noticeable in Malaga and other project partner countries and institutions. The groups presented the problems they had observed and ideas on how to promote tolerance and inclusion in various environments. Representatives from various fields participated in the evening discussion at Coffee ConScience: LGBTQ+ activists, healthcare professionals and community members. The evening culminated in an artistic performance, which was warmly received by all participants.
On the third day, the project participants visited the Youth Sexual Orientation Centre and got acquainted with its activities. This visit aimed to understand the clinical reality of the LGBTQ+ community in Malaga, what healthcare services they receive, and what challenges they face.
