Over the past five years, the Library and Information Resource Center have been purposefully contributing to the strategic goals of KUAS, constantly implementing innovations and providing quality services to the community. To manage available information resources more efficiently and provide appropriate access for the community, by 2020 the KUAS decided to install the new international systems Alma and Primo VE of the Exlibris supplier. The implementation of these systems has started according to the plan approved by Exlibris in 2021 at the beginning of March, successfully installed in the first half of the year and put into use in the real environment at the end of December. These systems were implemented in Lithuania for the first time together with the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences and Vytautas Magnus University.
These systems replaced the previously used Aleph and Primo systems from the same supplier, which were used by the KUAS through the eLABa consortium. The Alma system, run by library staff, is designed for all library processes (acquisition of resources, cataloging, accounting, user authentication, lending and receiving of publications to users, management of user data and information, dissemination of subscribed and open access resources, receipt of various statistical information, etc.). Primo VE, users know as a Virtual Library, which is for searching for and accessing all types of information resources, and to login in to user account. These modern, cloud platform systems are implemented due to more appropriate technological solutions and to independently and efficiently manage the available information resources. With the new systems librarians can work online on any computer or smart device. Systems are directly linked to each other, no additional tools and works are required for e-mail for configuring resources and transferring all resources to the virtual library. Alma also solved the problems of adapting the data of library sources to KUAS users, because previously the library resources were in the general catalog of Lithuanian colleges. The resources, links, and settings in the Primo VE system are easily customized to the needs of the college, and access to resources, etc., is quickly checked and adjusted. The new systems provide direct access to the data analytics and statistics subsystems generated by these systems, where a large number of typical data reports can be obtained and created according to the needs of KUAS. These functionalities could not be made or obtained using systems administered by the consortium.
Self-installation, administration and use of new systems there are many challenges on the acquisition of knowledge, frequent learning, but it pays off with a great result to the KUAS community.
