English Phonetics 3 Autumn Grazina Jedemskiene During the English phonetics course, students are taught to pronounce individual sounds correctly and perceive the aspects of coherent speech. The components of intonation and their functions in the communication process are introduced. Students will be able to express their thoughts clearly and persuasively, convey texts in different speech styles. The skill of determining the connection between English spelling and pronunciation is also developed. The skills of understanding live authentic general and professional language transmitted by various means of communication as well as speech items on various topics, and the ability to understand the meaning of the words pronounced in various accents are improved.
Basics of Linguistics 3 Autumn Albertas Juodeika The content of Basics of Linguistics consists of knowledge of language, its meaning, nature, functions and development. While studying the subject students will find out the tasks of Basics of Linguistics and its relationship with other sciences, as well as the main spheres of language influence on human thinking. They will get to know the world’s language families, language development and their research methods. The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the essential features of language as a social and intellectual system, explaining the main concepts, terms and problems of Basics of Linguistics.
English for Social Communication 6 Autumn Edvinas Ignatavicius English for social communication enhances the knowledge of this language through the understanding of the language as a system. The course enables students to practice oral and written English skills while expressing thoughts and conveying information on various topics. Speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills and comprehension are built through engagement in various tasks. Students are exposed to new vocabulary and expressions through rich authentic context. The ability to express different communicative intentions in different social, cultural, and linguistic environments is formed. Students are encouraged to independently enrich their knowledge of the language through a variety of media types.
English Grammar 1 6 Autumn Ligita Judickaite-Pasvenskiene The aim of the subject is to expand and deepen the knowledge of the grammar of English and to introduce the students with the peculiarities of the English language usage in both formal and academic contexts. English grammar is a part of the English language studies and helps to understand the language as a system.
English for Career and Employment 5 Spring Vaida Miseviciute English for Career and Employment forms the perception of the language as a system. The course enables students to practice oral and written English skills while expressing thoughts and conveying information on various topics needed for career and professional development. Speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills and comprehension are built through engagement in various tasks. Students are exposed to new vocabulary and expressions through rich authentic contexts to be used for their future employment and career development. The ability to express different communicative intentions in different social, cultural, and linguistic environments is formed. Students are encouraged to independently enrich their knowledge of the language as one of the employability skills through a variety of media types.
Philosophy of Language 3 Spring Andrius Svarplys The subject is devoted to the basics of philosophy of language. The first part of the course includes major conceptions of classical and modern philosophy on reality-knowledge-human mind as well as the conceptions of conventionalism, nominalism, scepticism, idealism, rationalism, empiricism and the others. The second part introduces contemporary philosophy of science, positivism, hermeneutics, „linguistic turn“ and the classics of philosophy of language: Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein; the postmodern theories on truth, text and power (Michel Foucault, J.Derrida). At the end particular attention is paid to the practical problems of translation.
Basics of the Science of Translation 3 Spring Ligita Judickaite-Pasvenskiene The aim of the subject is to introduce the development and tendencies of translation presenting the main theoreticians of translation studies. Special attention is given to the problems of adequacy and equivalence. The subject introduces the students with different types of meaning and translation strategies used in different types of texts; special attention is drawn to grammatical and lexical translation transformations.
English Grammar 2 6 Spring Grazina Jedemskiene The aim of the study subject is to expand and deepen the students’ existing knowledge of English grammar, to acquaint students with the peculiarities of the English language use in formal and academic contexts. English grammar is an integral part of the English language studies which helps to understand a language as an interacting system.
English for Business Administration 6 Autumn Ieva Brazauskaite-Zubaviciene during the subject studies students acquire knowledge of professional terminology and develop their abilities to communicate fluently in English in situations related to business administration, get awareness of business world issues as well as get used to apply subject knowledge and language skills relevantly. The abilities of expressing a critical approach and opinion argumentatively, summarize and draw conclusions in both formal and informal discussion situations as well as being able to chair and lead a business talk or meeting are developed. Students are encouraged to take an interest in the business matters of organizational structures, administration processes and cultural peculiarities. The subject develops students’ competences in written forms of communication while composing linguistic products necessary for business administration in English.
English Lexicology and Stylistics 6 Autumn dr.Zivile Nemickiene The aim of the course is to give a general understanding to the basic principles of lexicology and stylistics; to introduce to the basic concepts and methods of both sciences; to develop an understanding of the morphological structure of words, the correlation between a word-building and a meaning of a word; to reveal peculiarities of a word-formation, different types of meanings; to comprehend the semantic structure of words, different sense relations; to help to discern functional styles and stylistic devices; and to get acquainted with the history of language development through reflective engagement, and vocabulary changes analysing historical events. The course will provide thorough understanding of the background issues and different factors that govern the way language operates and determines the style of a text.

Methodology of Applied Research 3 Autumn dr.Rima Jasnauskaite Students studying the course acquire knowledge on applied researches, requirements of academic honesty, develop their abilities of how to design a plan of a research in the philological (linguistic) scientific field, construct the methodology necessary for the research, conduct the research according to the plan developed, process the data gained and draw conclusions on the basis of the findings as well as compose a written report on the research carried out, present orally about the work done according to requirements for academic works; moreover, the course develops students’ skills to analyse and critically evaluate linguistic phenomena and the processes of their application.
Research Paper 3 Autumn The aim of the subject is to develop the student’s ability to analyze, systematize and critically evaluate the scientific literature; to analyze the scientific and practical problems of the chosen topic using the scientific method.

In this course students learn how to express themselves in a business environment, develop the ability to use the correct register for verbal communication during spoken interactions and are introduced to the rules of written correspondence.
