Microbiology and Microbiological Investigations 4 Spring Žaneta Maželienė Students will get acquainted with the concept and development of microbiology, evaluate the peculiarities of microorganism biology (morphology, physiology, genetics, pathogenicity), the place of microorganisms in the infectious process, human exposure, ways of spread. Will know infectious immunity, will be able to inform patients before performing microbiological tests. This will allow them to take and accept samples for microbiological tests, evaluate the suitability of samples at the preanalytical stage. Students will be able to select microbiological methods for the pathological material and perform them technically. They will perform research quality control, will know research rate indicators, will recognize pathology.
Cytology and Histological Technique 5 Spring Daiva Jurkštienė Students, having achieved the results of the subject of cytology and histological technique, will evaluate the structure of the cell, the histological structure of tissues. They will be able to produce cytological smears and histological preparations, and will choose suitable staining methods for histological and cytological preparations to highlight different cell structures, independently prepare preparations for overview histological assessment.
Basics of Toxicology 3 Spring Evelina Bredelytė Gruodienė Toxicology is a medical science that studies poisons, their specifics and the interaction between poisons and living organisms. During Basics of toxicology studies, students will theoretically get acquainted with most important terms in toxicology, origins of poisons, the way they work, diagnostics, their effect on human organism, prevention, which helps avoid poisoning. Students will develop personal work skills by making

oral presentations, and will gain practical skills by analyzing problematic situations, relating to toxins in our close environment, will complete tasks to determine the quantity and quality of biologically active materials.

Clinical Haematological Investigations 3 Spring Giedrė Jarienė Students will learn the types and methods of performing hematological tests, and will understand the main laboratory ones diagnostic principles. Will evaluate the stages of laboratory research, materials collection rules. Will be able to relate the obtained results to the patient’s condition, will understand the main principles of operation of laboratory equipment, will be able to prepare laboratory devices for work, will be able to

perform and evaluate internal quality control. Will be able to independently perform co-clinical tests and

hematological laboratory tests and assess critical patient conditions according to laboratory tests.

Professional Internship of Morphological Investigations of Pathological Substance 3/6 Spring Daiva Jurkštienė Students will familiarize themselves with the cytology and histology laboratories of the pathology departments of medical institutions. Students will master the principles of cytological and histological research methods, work with the equipment available in the laboratory, analyze and evaluate research stages, improve practical skills in real working conditions.
Professional Internship of Haematological, Microbiological and Biochemical Investigations of Clinical Substance 3/6/9/12 Spring Daiva Jurkštienė/Žaneta Maželienė Professional practice is designed to apply students’ theoretical knowledge in practice. Students will get acquainted with the laboratories of treatment, research institutes of biochemistry, general clinical and microbiological research, master research methods, working principles of analyzers used in laboratories, improve practical skills, perform microbiological, biochemical and general clinical examinations of pathological material, quality control of examinations, compare test results with the norm.
General and Analytical Chemistry 4 Spring Jesus Manuel Barragan Ferrer/Diana Barragan Ferrer Students will be able to control the features of various chemical substances in order to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of various human vital and activity products by applying state-of-the-art analysis methods in the later studies. After reaching the intended learning outcomes, students will acquire the ability to apply the knowledge acquired in laboratory practice.
Genetics 3 Springs Asta Aleksandravičienė This course aims to expand students’ knowledge of the principles of genetics and introduce them to research methods and engineering principles in genetics. Throughout the course, students examine the importance of genetics and their role in the context of the modern economy, study research methods, and familiarize themselves with the application possibilities of laboratory equipment in genetics. The form of study includes lectures, seminars, group work, discussions, and laboratory work.  Student performance is assessed on how well they can analyze obtained results, search for scientific literature, and discuss the selected topic. Students are evaluated by testing of knowledge and skills.

General and Biomedical Physics 4 Autumn Skirmantė Vardauskaitė Students will acquire knowledge of medical-related physical processes occurring in the human body or its environment: they will understand various physical phenomena in the human body, examine the application of physical methods in medicine, principles of device operation, fundamentals of metrology, and develop their skills in specialized diagnostic research and assessment of their quality.

Basics of Public Health 3 Autumn Evelina Dailidaitė After studying the subject, the student will know the legal acts governing the organization of health care, and will be able to apply them in professional activities and teamwork. Students will be able to analyze the factors affecting health, working capacity, longevity, form an attitude towards health, disease prevention, and develop a healthier person by influencing his attitudes and behavior; understand and be able to assess the effects of external environmental factors, population health problems, risk factors and their correction. They will know what methods and means to avoid factors harmful to health, to protect and strengthen health, they will be able to anticipate public health safety problems and preventive measures.
    Genetic Engineering 5 Autumn Asta Aleksandravičienė This course aims to expand students’ knowledge of the principles of genetic engineering and introduce them to research methods and engineering principles in genetics. Throughout the course, students examine the artificial manipulation, modification, and recombination of DNA molecules to modify an organism or population. Also, the course will examine the creation of genetically modified organisms, their benefits and drawbacks, and the principles of gene therapy. After achieving the results of the study subject, students will know and understand the basic principles and methods of genetic engineering.  The form of study includes lectures, seminars, group work, discussions, and laboratory work. Student performance is assessed on how well they can analyze obtained results, search for scientific literature, and discuss the selected topic. Students are evaluated by testing of knowledge and skills.
Parasitology 4 Autumn Žaneta Maželienė Students will learn about parasitic protozoa, helminth and other groups of parasites. Will know the concept of parasitism, systematics of parasites, diversity, mechanisms of interaction between parasites and hosts, ways of spread of parasites. Know the diseases caused by parasites, their clinical signs, prevention principles. Will be able to diagnose parasitic diseases, identify types of parasites. Will inform patients before performing parasitological tests. Will be able to compare research indicators with the norm.
