The Erasmus+ programme offers many students a unique opportunity to study abroad, experience new cultures, and broaden their horizons. Elena is one of those who took advantage of this opportunity and went to study at the Instituto Politécnico do Porto in Portugal. Her experience shows how this choice can change the way you approach science, life, and personal development.

Elena was inspired to study abroad by her desire to test herself in a new academic environment, expand her professional knowledge, and gain international experience. Portugal was not chosen by chance – the country’s warm climate and the opportunity to practice water sports all year round were important factors, and the Polytechnic Institute of Porto offered a study programme that best suited her professional goals.

The start in a new country was not easy – it rained for two weeks in a row, which did not fully meet the expectations of sunny Portugal. In addition, it was necessary to adapt to the new academic system and cultural environment. However, over time, Elena adapted – she made new friends, discovered her favourite activities and became involved in the study process.

One of the greatest experiences at the Polytechnic Institute of Porto was the differences in the study system. Industrial Design Engineering students here are not examined in the traditional way – instead, they carry out many practical projects that require market analysis, prototyping and design presentation. This method developed not only creativity but also independence, the ability to work in groups and solve practical problems. The Erasmus+ experience also contributed to the improvement of language skills. Since English is not widely spoken in Portugal, Elena had to learn the basics of Portuguese. Although she did not learn to speak fluently, she began to understand the main points – this became a great personal victory.

Living in an international environment allowed her to better understand cultural differences and expand her communication skills. Elena noticed that Lithuanians are often more disciplined and responsible, while Western European students tend to be more relaxed and creative in their approach to studies. These differences helped her find a balance between being organised and creative, which will undoubtedly be useful in her future career.

Studying in Portugal was not limited to academic activities alone – Elena actively travelled, participated in cultural events and made new friends. This experience was invaluable for both her personal growth and her professional future. Of course, there were challenges – separation from family and friends, the language barrier and adapting to a new learning system required effort. ‘However, this experience taught me to adapt to new circumstances, become more independent and more self-confident,’ says the student.

The Erasmus+ programme provided Elena not only with academic knowledge but also with practical skills that will be useful in the future. Working on group projects, market analysis, prototyping and the ability to present ideas – all of these will be important in her professional journey. Elena encourages everyone considering Erasmus+ not to be afraid of challenges and to take advantage of this unique opportunity. It is not only an opportunity to study abroad, but also a path to personal development, new acquaintances and life experiences that will last a lifetime.
