<\/a>The Annual Conference & Expo was opened by Luis von Ahn, cofounder and CEO of Duolingo, a popular language-learning platform. Von Ahn is known for coinventing CAPTCHA, which distinguishes between humans and bots online; receiving a MacArthur Fellowship, commonly called a \u201cgenius grant;\u201d and founding two companies that were acquired by Google while in his 20s.<\/p>\nVon Ahn was named one of the \u201c10 Most Brilliant Scientists\u201d by Popular Science Magazine, one of the \u201c50 Best Brains in Science\u201d by Discover, and one of the \u201c100 Most Innovative People in Business\u201d by Fast Company Magazine. In 2018, von Ahn won the Lemelson-MIT Prize and in 2023, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
Social justice advocates Phoebe Ferguson and Keith Plessy were invited to close the Annual Conference & Expo. More than 125 years ago, Ferguson\u2019s and Plessy\u2019s ancestors were opposing principals in a court decision that upheld the constitutionality of Jim Crow laws mandating segregation under the \u201cseparate but equal\u201d doctrine.<\/p>\n
Today, Ferguson and Plessy are working together to spark important conversations about finding unity and fostering mutual understanding. In 2009, they cofounded the Plessy & Ferguson Initiative to advance civil rights, history, memorialization, and transitional justice.<\/p>\n
