The components of intonation and their functions in the communication process are introduced. Students will be able to express their thoughts clearly and persuasively, convey texts in different speech styles. The skill of determining the connection between English spelling and pronunciation is also developed. The skills of understanding live authentic general and professional language transmitted by various means of communication as well as speech items on various topics, and the ability to understand the meaning of the words pronounced in various accents are improved.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

They will get to know the world\u2019s language families, language development and their research methods. The aim of the subject is to acquaint students with the essential features of language as a social and intellectual system, explaining the main concepts, terms and problems of Basics of Linguistics.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Philosophy of Language<\/td>\n3<\/td>\nSpring<\/td>\nAndrius Svarplys<\/td>\nThe subject is devoted to the basics of philosophy of language. The first part of the course includes major conceptions of classical and modern\u00a0philosophy on reality-knowledge-human mind as well as the conceptions of conventionalism, nominalism, scepticism, idealism, rationalism, empiricism and the others. The second part introduces contemporary philosophy of science, positivism, hermeneutics, \u201elinguistic turn\u201c and the classics of philosophy of language: Gottlob Frege, Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein; the postmodern theories on truth, text and power (Michel Foucault, J.Derrida). At the end particular attention is paid to the practical problems of translation.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

English Lexicology and Stylistics<\/td>\n6<\/td>\nAutumn<\/td>\ndr.Zivile Nemickiene<\/td>\nThe aim of the course is to give a general understanding to the basic principles of lexicology and stylistics; to introduce to the basic concepts and methods of both sciences; to develop an understanding of the morphological structure of words, the correlation between a word-building and a meaning of a word; to reveal peculiarities of a word-formation, different types of meanings; to comprehend the semantic structure of words, different sense relations; to help to discern functional styles and stylistic devices; and to get acquainted with the history of language development through reflective engagement, and vocabulary changes analysing historical events. The course will provide thorough understanding of the background issues and different factors that govern the way language operates and determines the style of a text.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
